Chiara Cassar

Hi, I’m Chiara! An artist and art educator based in Malta. I studied Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and later completed a program in Museum Education at the University of Malta, which deepened my interest in how people engage with art.

My work sits somewhere between abstraction and representation, often focusing on process, materiality and the handmade. I like to leave visible layers and underpainting in my work, allowing the process to remain part of the final piece. I’m also interested in how making a painting can shape the outcome just as much as any planned concept.

Alongside my studio practice, I’ve worked as an Art teacher at a secondary school for the past two years. In 2024, I was involved in the Malta Biennale, working with students from schools across Malta. Together, we explored the pavilion Matri-Archive of the Mediterranean, using fabric painting and weaving to reflect on the role of women in Maltese history and the ideas they drew from the exhibition. Projects like this are important to me, they combine creative process, critical thinking, and collective making in a way that’s both meaningful and accessible. My work has been exhibited in Malta and the UK, including the Chelsea College of Arts MA Summer Show, Divergent Thinkers 05 at the Maritime Museum, and Shifting Contexts at Spazju Kreattiv.
